There is an exceptional appeal to stories where orphans take on the role of hero, because it is true heroism. When you step into the world and face it with bare chests, without a social system to support and protect you, it makes sense when we recall some of the most memorable childhood stories: Heidi, Annie, Tarzan, Sara or Sally, Oliver Twist, Tom Sawyer, and even Harry Potter. These are the heroes from whom we learn to love life and truly belong to the world, as Judy Abbott put it. This novel, written in 1912, has been a source of inspiration for readers, writers, and artists alike ever since, and has been adapted countless times into plays, musicals, films, television series, and even cartoons. This novel tells the story of Judy Abbott, who leaves the orphanage after a guardian decides to sponsor her education, having noticed her exceptional talent for writing—particularly witty writing—and her insistence on happiness as a choice in life, not a birthright. This novel stands as a counterpoint to all fairy tales. It subtly and gently dismantles the myth of the princess imprisoned in a tower, awaiting a savior prince. While a savior does appear at the beginning of the story, in the form of a tall, unknown shadow, we follow Judy's journey as she breaks free from his guardianship, makes her own decisions, and grows up in ways no one could have imagined. We all witness the story of the orphaned girl who becomes an equal to the idea of a savior prince, and how she, in turn, decides to venture into the world to save it. This book is a step in this direction; it reminds us, at the very least, that happiness is a choice. And a person who is aware of their choices is a strong person. Who knows what the future holds? Perhaps a happy person.
